LIES, MISREPORTING AND CATASTROPHE IN THE MIDDLE EAST
A talk and conversation on the role of the journalist in the misreporting on the Middle East. Fisk begins with a linguistic analysis and says that our language has become not just a debased ally but a full verbal partner in the language of governments, armies, generals and weapons makers. Journalists become participants in the unfolding catastrophe, particularly in Palestine, where peace has become almost impossible.

England's most famous reporter for the Middle East, Robert Fisk, made his annual trip to Berkeley, CA, to speak at a benefit for MECA, the
Middle East Childrens Alliance. He is an acclaimed author and Middle East correspondent for the London Independent. This time he had asked to be interviewed on stage by Hatem Bazian, the young Palestinian American lecturer at the University of CA Berkeley. Between Fisk and Bazian they filled the Berkeley Church to capacity.

Richard Heinberg
PEAK EVERYTHING
Richard Heinberg has influenced the work of those who are searching for a way out of today's interlocking crisis of climate, finance and resource depletion. I visited him in Sept. 2010 at a crucial moment. He had just written the new preface for his 2007 book Peak Everything, Waking Up to the Century of Declines. Analyzing the events of the past three years Heinberg writes in his update that the question of when we will reach the peak of the resources that we made ourselves dependent on has finally been answered - and the time is NOW. The economic crisis, he says, is not a dip from which we will recover. Humanity has achieved an unsustainable pinnacle of population size and consumption rates, and our species needs to learn right now to live within the resource limits of the Earth.

This interview brings up the intriguing history of the limits to growth movement, what other energy sources and raw material are close to peak, the need to reform the financial system and the growth imperative built into policy. Heinberg's work inspired the transition town movement - and he gives a brief survey of the recent successes.

Heinberg is the author of eight other books, including The Party’s Over, and Blackout, Coal, Climate, and the Last Energy Crisis.

Julia Whitty
For Love and Protection of the Deep Ocean
and thoughts on the impact of the BP oil spill
Julia Whitty is a diver, former nature documentary filmmaker, author and investigative journalist. As environmental correspondent for Mother Jones she had just returned from the Gulf Coast. She wrote: "BP and its partners reckless quest has endangered and perhaps condemned not just the Gulf Coast, but the largest, richest, most pristine, most biologically important, and last completely unprotected ecosystem left on Earth: the deep ocean."

Julia Whitty explains why the deep ocean is the foundation of life for the upper layer of the sunlit sea. Many whales, dolphins, seals, sea turtles, sharks, manta rays, and smaller predatory fish are nocturnal hunters, dependent on the movements of a vast community of organisms that live in the deep ocean. That community is known as the Deep Scattering Layer. And this Deep Scattering Layer that rises and falls with day and night and that is visited by the creatures of the sunlit sea is threatened by the invisible part of the gigantic out-pour that never came to the surface because it was hit by chemical dispersant and now made doubly invisible by the White House climate and energy adviser, Carol Browner, who claims that 75% of the oil has already disappeared.

FAMILY OF SECRETS
An interview with the author, Russ Baker
Gore Vidal called Baker's book about the Bush Dynasty and America's invisible government one of the most important books of the past ten years. In Family of Secrets Baker asks the obvious, but unanswered question, how can "such a clan occupy the presidency or vice presidency of the US for 20 of the past 28 years" with yet another Bush, Jeb Bush waiting in the wings. Family of Secrets reads and was conceived as a detective story, based on more than 500 interviews and thousands of documents, backed up by more than a 1000 footnotes. And even though the book uncovers a secret political life for all Bushes it is much more than a family expose. In this interview Russ Baker describes the powers behind the scenes, with examples from the CIA, oil and banking, and how these institutions are created by, and make use of people like the Bush family.

Frances Moore Lappé
GETTING A GRIP
Barbara Kingsolver says of Frances Moore Lappé's most recent book: Getting a Grip, “This is not an ordinary book; it’s more like a new pair of glasses, allowing you to see everything around you with greater clarity. Suddenly the world is more comprehensible, even more beautiful." Frances Moore Lappé is the author of 18 books including the three-million copy Diet for a Small Planet. Diet for a Small Planet was the first book to expose the enormous waste built into U.S. grain-fed meat production. For Frances that was a powerful symbol of a global food system that is creating hunger out of plenty. Eating a planet-centered diet, she argued, means choosing what is best for the earth and our bodies—a daily action that reminds us of our power to create a saner world.

France Moore Lappé asks several important questions: how can we make sense of the fact that we are creating a world that none of us individually would chose and - what are the causal forces that produce this needless suffering. She lays out how we can draw on the resources that lie dormant in every human being. Neuroscience, she says, affirms that human beings are predisposed or "softwired," for empathy, cooperation, fairness, and the desire to have power, to be imaginative and to create.

Silvia Ribeiro
GEOENGINEERING THE PLANET
Geo-engineers are proposing large scale global projects to reduce solar radiation. They want to force the oceans into absorbing more CO2 through "fertilization", and they work on carbon sequestration and weather modification. While most climate scientist left the Copenhagen Summit feeling gloomy about the lack of action to halt climate change, a small group felt emboldened. They are the geo-engineers who are proposing large scale global projects to reduce solar radiation by spreading sulphate aerosols into the atmosphere, placing sunshades into space or by whitening the clouds. They also want to force the oceans into absorbing more of the excess CO2 through "fertilization" by spreading urea, iron or phosphorous. And they work on carbon sequestration and weather modification. What seemed until recently a mad science fiction project is now gaining acceptance by corporations, politicians, the US Department of Energy, climate change deniers and funders.

The nonprofit civil society organization, the ETCGroup, has followed the issue of geoengineering more closely and over the longest period of time. The ETC group has fundamental objections to geoengineering since it treats only the symptoms, not the causes of climate change and can be used as an excuse for delaying the implementation of CO2 reductions. But they also wanted to issue a warning that large scale open field, real world experiments in ocean fertilization and solar radiation management may be about to begin and need to come under scrutiny.

Helen Caldicott
STOP NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS
Helen Caldicott's Appeal to President Obama
This is a medical lecture on the health effects of uranium mining, processing, radiation damage to cells and genes and the routine releases of radioactive materials such as Tritium from nuclear power plants during "normal" operations.

When Obama in his 2010 State of the Union address strongly endorsed nuclear power as one of the solutions to global warming - and said: "That means building a new generation of safe, clean nuclear power plants in this country" the anti nuclear campaigner Helen Caldicott responded in the Huffington Post. Throughout her almost 40 year long international campaign and her writings in seven books she has always made the connection between nuclear weapons, nuclear power, and environmental destruction. She said that not only should no new nuclear power plants be built but called for: ending "the sale of nuclear reactors globally by the US, Russia, France and others for they are fundamentally factories for nuclear weapons production because they manufacture plutonium..". Ultimately - she said - "the goal should be the cessation of the production of enriched uranium and plutonium by closing all nuclear power plant operations."

Helen Caldicott
IF YOU LOVE THIS PLANET
The Canadian writer Naomi Klein said about Helen Caldicott: (she) "has the rare ability to combine science with passion, logic with love, and urgency with humor." In 2009 the revised edition of Caldicott's book: If You Love This Planet was published by Norton. In a yearlong research process she updated the information on dangerous global trends such as ozone depletion, global warming, toxic pollution, food contamination, and deforestation - and, as always, she gives a prescription for a cure and cause for hope. Helen Caldicott rallies readers to action with the contention that our fight for the planet will draw its strength from love for the Earth itself.

Helen Caldicott, has devoted the last 38 years to an international campaign to educate the public about the medical hazards of the nuclear age and the necessary changes in human behavior to stop environmental destruction. She was only 23 years old when she received her medical degree from the University of Adelaide, Australia, in 1961. Ten year later, in 1971, she was in her first successful antinuclear campaign to stop French atmospheric nuclear testing in the Pacific.

While living in the United States from 1977 to 1986, she co-founded Physicians for Social Responsibility, an organization of 23,000 doctors committed to educating their colleagues about the dangers of nuclear power, nuclear weapons and nuclear war.

David Ray Griffin
THE MYSTERIOUS COLLAPSE OF WORLD TRADE CENTER 7
The collapse of Building 7 on the afternoon of 9/11 was overshadowed by that of the Twin Towers in spite of one eerie similarity. Even though it had not been hit by a plane, the 47 story building also came down at free fall speed, collapsing into it's footprint. FEMA admitted in their initial report in 2002 that they had no good explanation as to why the building came down and an official silence fell over the fate of the building for six more years.

Then, in November 2008, the federal technology agency NIST released the Final WTC 7 Investigation Report. 9/11 researcher David Ray Griffin scrutinized the NIST report page by page and published his findings in book form in the summer of 2009. He set out to prove that NIST arrived at their conclusions by disregarding evidence and said that "The omission of evidence by NIST is so massive, that I treat it as a distinct type of scientific fraud."

Prof. Griffin retired from the Claremont School of Theology, where he had taught for 30 years, and wrote in 2004 the most widely read book on the subject: The New Pearl Harbor, disturbing questions about the Bush administration and 9/11.

Cynthia McKinney
THE FREE GAZA MOVEMENT
The Free Gaza Movement began in the Fall of 2006. Seeing all land borders of Gaza controlled by Israel - and by Egypt at Rafah - severely restricting the crossing of urgently needed food, fuel, and medicine for 1.4 million Palestinians - they decided to reach Gaza by sea, and directly challenge the Israeli siege.

In response to the month-long Israeli war on Gaza that began at the end of December 2008 they sent a ship with over 3 tons of emergency medical supplies, and 3 surgeons. Cynthia McKinney, former U.S. congresswoman and Green Party presidential candidate, decided to participate in this journey. This is her story of the ramming of the first boat, and boarding of the second Free Gaza boat by the Israeli navy.

Dr. Patch Adams
THE REAL PATCH ADAMS
In the 1998 movie Robin Williams played Patch Adams, the funny doctor with a red clown's nose, the young man who almost committed suicide but then found joy in becoming a physician and taking care of people. That movie made Patch Adams a folk hero but it also undermined the deeper meaning of the healing project that he and his friends were and are building today.

In this program Patch Adams gives a review of the history of his project, the Gesundheit Institute, lists some of the international activities on behalf of orphans, prevention of child sexual slavery and women's mortality in childbirth. Adams now wants to build a full hospital based on the principles of healing that he laid out in this talk.

Helen Caldicott
BANNING NUCLEAR WEAPONS
The anti-nuclear campaigner Dr. Helen Caldicott spoke in Berkeley at a June 2009 meeting of SuperBOLD, an organization dedicated to enforcing the Nuclear Free ordinance. They are trying to prevent the Berkeley Public library from hiring the 3M corporation to maintain the Radio Frequency checkpoint system there. 3M refuses to sign a contract that they will not do “work for nuclear weapons.”

For over 35 years Helen Caldicott has led the international efforts to educate the public about the dangers of nuclear power and weapons and has been named one of the most influential women of the 20th century by the Smithsonian Institute.

Derrick Jensen:
BRINGING DOWN CIVILIZATION
Derrick Jensen wrote in his early book: “Listening to the Land”: “We are members of the most destructive culture ever to exist. Our assault on the natural world, on indigenous and other cultures, on women, on children, on all of us through the possibility of nuclear suicide --all these are unprecedented in their magnitude and ferocity." And he follows that with a question: “Why do we act as we do? What are sane and effective responses to outrageously destructive behavior? My work and life revolve around these questions. “ When I recorded him in the Oakland, California warehouse of AK Press, Derrick Jensen asked that question in a much more pointed way: If civilization is destroying us and the earth – do we need to bring down civilization?

Derrick Jensen lives in Northern California, he teaches creative writing in prison and has written many books, among them: endgame (the book this talk is based on), The Culture of Make Believe, A Language Older Than Words, and Listening to the Land.

And among all the triggers to that failure from US support of the Mujahedin and Al Quaeda to the war lords one element is not recognized in it’s real importance: the role of the trade in opium.

Peter Dale Scott, author of “Drugs Oil, and War” and “Cocaine Politics: Drugs, Armies, and the CIA in Central America” is one of the most respected researchers on the use of drugs in the strategies of the CIA and in US foreign policy. Peter Dale Scott on Thomas Merton
THE MANY GATED CITY
This is a 25 minute talk by Peter Dale Scott on Thomas Merton, the catholic priest, Trappist monk, writer of over 70 books, poet, and social activist. Scott, best known for his writings on foreign policy, the CIA and the drug trade, shares many of the complexities that have made Thomas Merton, who died in 1968, so intriguing. To this day Thomas Merton's name and writings are associated with the acceptance of the spiritual traditions of Buddhism, Islam, Hinduism, Sufism by western spiritual thinkers and poets such as Thoreau, Yeats, Pound, Eliot, and Rilke. The spiritual and literary connections that Scott lays out in this talk are interwoven with not just Merton's ideas on mutual respect, inner and outer peace, liberation theology, and Gandhian nonviolence - but with the vision for a cultural societal as well as a personal change that can bring about a peaceful world.

This is a fascinating survey of the rich history of mutually inspiring contact between the living traditions of the East and West that now have been suffocated in the war on terror. Literary and spiritual contacts that are essential for world peace have been broken by war. And in that sense a talk on Merton is a talk on the road to peace - especially from a poet and political writer such as Scott who knows so much about war.

Peter Dale Scott
THE ROAD TO 9/11
Peter Dale Scott is a former diplomat and Professor Emeritus of English at the University of California, Berkeley. He has written on 9/11, the CIA involvement in South East Asia, the drug wars, and the assassination of John F. Kennedy. He also is an accomplished and much published poet.

His most recent book: The Road to 9-11, Wealth, Empire and the Future of America, was published by the University of California Press in late 2007. Reaching back to the 1960s Scott gives evidence of cover-ups of domestic criminal acts and momentous secret decision making by an ever smaller number of players. He investigates how policies of Presidents since Nixon have created the background for 9/11. He also shows how US intelligence agencies have become involved in groups they backed or created, such as the Taliban and al Quaeda.

Peter Dale Scott spoke about his new book in September 2007 at Lawrence Ferlinghetti’s bookstore, City Lights.

SAVING AMERICAN POLITICS FROM THE PRESENT TWO-PARTY SYSTEM
The disparity of income and wealth in this country was increased by the first round of bank bail-outs. On Jan. 27, 2009, in front of an audience of Republicans, Scott explained in great detail the necessity to construct future bail-outs to diminish that gap for the sake of democracy. This is a lucid analysis and a well researched guideline for all who want to influence future financial policies.

The Republican Round Table meets in a SF hotel. About 60 members, some with recognizable names, came to hear him. The only media in attendance were TUC Radio and, as guest, the former Ramparts editor Warren Hinkle accompanied by his basset hound. (45 minutes)

George Galloway
VIVA PALESTINA
Breaking the siege of GAZA
George Galloway is an outspoken Member of the British Parliament, serving since 1987. He is perhaps best known for his support of Palestine and his campaign to end economic sanctions against Iraq. When he stood up to Tony Blair and called the invasion of Iraq illegal he was expelled from the Labour Party.

After participating in daily demonstrations in England during the Israeli assault on Gaza from the end of December 2008 into January 2009, Galloway led a convoy of vehicles loaded with humanitarian aid to Gaza. Under the name VIVA Palestina the convoy began in England in February 2009, crossed from Spain into North Africa and entered Gaza from Egypt with over 200 vehicles through the Rafah crossing that is usually kept locked by the Egyptian government.

Galloway says that if it were not for the extraordinary influence of the Israeli government that maintains a blockade of GAZA, aid from governments and UN sources would be pouring into the war ravaged Gaza strip. He says that 61,200 homes were destroyed and Palestinians are still living in the rubble because Israel refuses to allow building materials into Gaza. Galloway plans to do what the international community fails to do and continue to lead convoys from other countries as well, including Russia and China.

Galloway was touring the US in April and May 2009 to invite donors and participants from the United States for the next convoy to Gaza. The plan - since accomplished - was to leave New York on the 4th of July, fly directly into Egypt, purchase vehicles and medical supplies and repeat the successful breach of the Rafah crossing.

Solving the Financial Crisis by Monetary Reform
"The U.S. monetary reform is urgently needed: It is long past time we look at the implications of the privatization of money created by the 1913 Federal Reserve Act, the bank fractional reserve system and our debt-based economic system. Unless we have dramatic reform of monetary policy, the entire economic system will continue to accelerate wealth upwards. I am currently working on drafting legislation for an ‘American Monetary Act’ to address these and other issues in order to protect the economic well being of America."

Observers believe that this single measure has the potential of bringing together tens of millions of people who have realized that our bank-run debt-based monetary system lies at the center of the financial crisis. The question is of course - how are these tens of millions going to find out that there is such legislation being developed. I interviewed Zarlenga in May 2009 after his return from Washington, DC, where he had briefed members of Congress.

When Cindy Sheehan’s son Casey was killed in Iraq she dedicated herself to the mission of not just ending this war, but to addressing the underlying causes that lead us to accept violence and war. She is the founder of Gold Star Families for Peace, an organization of Americans who have loved ones killed in wars. She has written three well received books: "Not One More Mother's Child”, “Peace Mom” and “Dear President Bush”

Robert Fisk
THE AGE OF THE WARRIOR
Fisk is Britain’s most celebrated foreign correspondent and has been named International Journalist of the Year seven times. He is currently the Middle East correspondent for The Independent of London and has covered eleven major wars in over three decades. He lives in Beirut and was one of only two journalists who had the courage to remain there through the duration of the Lebanese civil war. I filmed him at his most recent, rare, visit to the US as he spoke in front of a capacity audience in Berkeley, CA. He was greeted with a standing ovation.

Anybody writing on current events or making policy decisions for the Middle East needs to take Fisk's analysis into account. Fisk argues for an immediate troop withdrawal, both from Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Age of the Warrior, his most recent book, is a collection of essays from his paper, The Independent. Robert Fisk's previous books include Pity the Nation and The Great War for Civilization. In his talk about his new book, The Great War for Civilization, Robert Fisk offers his thoughts on the most urgent issues of our day: From the Algerian war, the Palestine Israel war, the invasion of Afghanistan, the sanctions on Iraq and the spread of depleted uranium, each invasion by the new and old colonial powers has made Muslims more angry of the West. In light of decades of bloodshed Fisk says how surprised he is “how restrained Muslims have been with us.”

Robert Fisk has lived in and reported on the Middle East since 1976 and has seen or tracked down firsthand accounts of all the major events of the last quarter century. He speaks Arabic and has a keen understanding of both the plight of ordinary people and the machinations of extraordinary villains and politicians. Bill McKibben on

A talk and conversation with Michael Pollan
Bill McKibben’s book: ‘The End of Nature’ is regarded as the first book for a general audience about climate change. Published in 1989, it has been printed in more than 20 languages. He has since written on localization, alternative energy, and the risks associated with human genetic engineering. In his most recent book: ‘Deep Economy: The Wealth of Communities and the Durable Future’ he envisions a transition to local-scale enterprise.

McKibben and his family live in Vermont. He is a scholar in residence at Middlebury College where he launched the campaign: stepitup2007, demanding that global warming pollution be cut 80 percent by 2050. McKibben spoke in Berkeley in March 2007. The church was filled to capacity with an enthusiastic crowd. He was joined on stage by a colleague and fellow author, Michael Pollan, author of “The Omnivore's Dilemma”, and “Botany of Desire”.

Dr. Lonnie Thompson
ABRUPT CLIMATE CHANGE AND OUR FUTURE
Dr. Thompson issues a warning that the mountain glaciers he knows and loves are melting ever more dramatically just within the year of 2007. He is the leading expert on glaciers with 30 years of on location research.

In three decades he has explored most of the mountain glaciers of this world, has learned their history going back tens of thousands of years via the ice cores he and his team drilled at altitudes that no helicopter can reach. He came to San Francisco in early December 2007 to issue this warning.

Thompson was the honored speaker at the December 2007 meeting of the American Geophysical Union. The hotel where Dr. Thompson spoke recorded the event for the AGU. This is the only other audio or visual record of this amazing talk.

DR. JAMES HANSEN, NASA and DR. HERMANN SCHEER,
World Council for Renewable Energy and member of the German Parliament
Dr. James Hansen is one of the few climate scientists who has consistently warned that the impact that humans have on the climate is bringing about changes that are faster than we ever believed and maybe irreversible if action is not taken now. Hansen is Director of the NASA Institute for Space Studies in New York City, a division of the Goddard Space Flight Center.

I interviewed Hansen after his lecture at the December 2006 meeting of the American Geophysical Union in San Francisco.

Dr. Hermann Scheer
A large industrialized country already gets 10% of their electricity from renewable sources. And if the present rate of conversion is maintained, this country will have phased out nuclear and fossil fuels within the next 50 years. And this country, Germany, is not even blessed with abundant wind or sun. Germany, for 15 years now, has shown the determinations to move away from centralized to decentralized power, from commercial to non-commercial energy production, and to come up with solutions to climate change, peak oil and the dangers of nuclear power.

At the root of these developments is the German Renewable Energy Act, the EEG. The lead author of the EEG is Dr. Hermann Scheer, chairman of the World Council for Renewable Energy, now serving his 6th term as elected member of the German Parliament.

I interviewed Scheer on February 16 in the noisy courtyard of his hotel in Palo Alto, CA.

Daniel Ellsberg
THE THREAT OF WAR ON IRAN
When Daniel Ellsberg released the Pentagon Papers in 1971 they revealed the US Government's lies about the war on Vietnam. 35 years later Ellsberg received the Right Livelihood Award, the so-called alternative Nobel Price, for “… dedicating his life to inspiring others to follow his example.”

For the last 6 years Ellsberg has campaigned against the exercise of executive power by the Bush administration. He calls for action to end the expansion of the war in the Middle East and an attack on Iran. He urges government insiders to come up with the new set of Pentagon papers, to act now and not wait until they write their memoirs. The American public needs to see the current attack plans on Iran in order to prevent a terrible expansion of the war in the Middle East.

John Nichols
THE IMPEACHMENT OF BUSH AND CHENEY
The acclaimed author, Washington correspondent for the Nation, and media critic John Nichols wrote a book entitled: The Genius of Impeachment. The author Studs Terkel said about this book: "Never within my memory has the case for impeachment of Bush and his equally crooked confederates been so clearly and fervently offered as John Nichols has done in this book. They are after all our public SERVANTS who have rifled our savings, bled our young, and challenged our sanity. And Nichols has given us the history, the language and the arguments we will need to do so."

John Nichols had come to San Francisco just before the November 2006 election to urge the group of friends who had gathered to meet him that the real political work was to begin on the day after the election. And that work would be – he suggested - to bring about the impeachment of Bush and Cheney.

STOLEN ELECTIONS
Professor Mark Crispin Miller, NYU
Miller writes in his book, Fooled Again, that both the 2000 and 2004 elections were stolen. He presents massive documentation, backed by 56 pages of notes, of how this was done. In this talk he describes the mindset of both the major parties and the media that allowed the theft to happen and go unchallenged.

We need to reclaim America and insure ourselves the right to vote, he says, otherwise this experiment in democracy is finished. Most importantly, the installation of voting machines in state after state needs to be stopped.

Mark Crispin Miller is professor of media studies at New York University and the author of the book: Fooled Again, How the Right Stole the 2004 Elections. This talk was recorded by EONS and TUC Radio at the Grand Lake Theater in Oakland, California, on May 4th, 2006.

David Ray Griffin: 9-11 and the American Empire,
How Should Religious People Respond
David Ray Griffin takes a critical look at the official 9/11 Commission Report. Professor Griffin argues that "omissions and distortions" in the report amount to a cover-up by government officials and says that the available evidence suggests that the Bush administration was complicit in the 9/11 attacks. Professor Griffin covers topics he says have been inadequately answered by the commission. These include questions surrounding the failure of fighter planes to intercept the hijacked planes, failure to admit that the FBI had information in advance about the attacks, and the behavior of President Bush and his Secret Service detail following notification that a second plane had hit the World Trade Center. The talk was recorded at the University of Wisconsin in Madison on April 18, 2005.
David Ray Griffin is professor emeritus at the Claremont School of Theology, where he taught for over 30 years (retiring in 2004). He has authored or edited over two dozen books, including "God and Religion in the Postmodern World," "Religion and Scientific Naturalism," and "The New Pearl Harbor: Disturbing Questions About the Bush Administration and 9/11."
