This is the program for July 1

Tom Greco
THE END OF MONEY AND THE FUTURE OF CIVILIZATION

Tom Greco demystifies money and banking and explains the destructive power of the current financial system. He challenges us to recognize that our dreams of a sane, just and ecologically sound future can become reality only if we change the way in which money is created and used.

Tom Greco was recorded at the beginning of his lecture tour for his most recent book: THE END OF MONEY AND THE FUTURE OF CIVILIZATION. A former engineer and college professor, Greco has written on monetary and financial innovation for over 30 years. Earlier books include: New Money for Healthy Communities and Money and Debt, A Solution to the Global Crisis. His web site is http://www.reinventingmoney.com
Kelly Durkin and I recorded him at IONS in Petaluma, CA, on May 5, 2009.
This is NOT a double program.

Stephen Zarlenga
THE AMERICAN MONETARY ACT
Solving the Financial Crisis by Monetary Reform
Congressman Dennis Kucinich has posted the following on his web site:
"The U.S. monetary reform is urgently needed: It is long past time we look at the implications of . . . the privatization of money created by the 1913 Federal Reserve Act, the bank fractional reserve system and our debt-based economic system. Unless we have dramatic reform of monetary policy, the entire economic system will continue to accelerate wealth upwards. I am currently working on drafting legislation for an ‘American Monetary Act’ to address these and other issues in order to protect the economic well being of America."
<http://kucinich.us/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2786&Itemid=76>

Observers believe that this single measure has the potential of bringing together tens of millions of people who have realized that our bank-run debt-based monetary system lies at the center of the financial crisis. The question is of course - how are these tens of millions going to find out that there is such legislation being developed?

Kucinich is working closely with Stephen Zarlenga, director of the American Monetary Institute <http://www.monetary.org/> and author of: The Lost Science of Money. I interviewed Zarlenga in May 2009 after his return from Washington, DC, where he had briefed members of Congress. A report on the briefing was done by Richard Cook. <http://www.richardccook.com/>

George Galloway
VIVA PALESTINA

George Galloway is an outspoken Member of the British Parliament, serving since 1987. He is perhaps best known for his support of Palestine and his campaign to end economic sanctions against Iraq. When he stood up to Tony Blair and called the invasion of Iraq illegal he was expelled from the Labour Party.

After participating in daily demonstrations in England during the Israeli assault on Gaza from the end of December 2008 into January 2009, Galloway led a convoy of vehicles loaded with humanitarian aid to Gaza. Under the name VIVA Palestina the convoy began in England in February 2009, crossed from Spain into North Africa and entered Gaza from Egypt with over 200 vehicles through the Rafah crossing that is usually kept locked by the Egyptian government.

Galloway says that if it were not for the extraordinary influence of the Israeli government that  maintains a blockade of GAZA, aid from governments and UN sources would be pouring into the war ravaged Gaza strip. He says that 61,200 homes were destroyed and Palestinians are still living in the rubble because Israel refuses to allow building materials into Gaza. Galloway plans to do what the international community fails to do and continue to lead convoys from other countries as well, including Russia and China.

Galloway was touring the US in April and May 2009 to invite donors and participants from the United States for the next convoy to Gaza. The plan is to leave New York on the 4th of July, fly directly into Egypt, purchase vehicles and medical supplies and repeat the successful breach of the Rafah crossing. <http://www.vivapalestina-us.org >

Peter Dale Scott
AMERICA'S AFGHANISTAN
US National Security and a Heroin-Ravaged State

The US State Department calls Afghanistan a failed state that justifies US intervention, rather than acknowledging that US intervention has caused that so-called failure. And among all the triggers to that failure from US support of the Mujahedin and Al Quaeda to the war lords one element is not recognized in it’s real importance: the role of the trade in opium.

Peter Dale Scott, author of “Drugs Oil, and War” and “Cocaine Politics: Drugs, Armies, and the CIA in Central America” is one of the most respected researchers on the use of drugs in the strategies of the CIA and in US foreign policy. <http://www.peterdalescott.net/> He says that the unprecedented increase in Afghani opium production in the last 5 years could never have happened without outside support.

While Afghanistan is being ravaged by heroin and many farmers are forced to grow for very little profit the real gains of drug production are made by large political players and on the international market. Even though Afghanistan now supplies over 90% of the world’s heroin, the Afghan portion of the global heroin network, in dollar terms, is financially minute compared to what is earned elsewhere. According to the UN, the ultimate value in world markets in 2007 of Afghanistan’s $4 billion opium crop was about $110 billion.

This talk by Professor Scott is putting names and faces on the beneficiaries of that drug trade.
Peter Dale Scott was recoded in the mountains of Northern California at a small gathering of friends and neighbors. He has since expanded this speech and the longer text with footnotes is posted at <http://www.japanfocus.org/-Peter_Dale-Scott/3145>

Peter Dale Scott
LIFTING THE STATE OF EMERGENCY
An unresolved legacy of the Bush administration

Very few seem to know and among the few who know most don't seem to care that the US remains under a state of emergency declared by the Bush administration. The state of emergency was formally proclaimed five days after 9/11 on September 14th, 2001, and extended by Bush repeatedly thereafter, most recently on August 28th, 2008 for yet another year.

Under cover of this State of Emergency, the Bush administration enacted many extreme measures, ranging from suspension of habeas corpus, to the preparations for martial law in the US.
In early 2009 an attempt was made to alert the public and put pressure on Congress to lift the state of emergency.

In February 2009 Professor Peter Dale Scott and former Congressman Dan Hamburg wrote a formal letter to President Obama's staff and several congress people. They referred to the National Emergencies Act, one of the post-Watergate reforms that requires specifically that not later than six months after a national emergency is declared, and not later than the end of each six-month period thereafter that such emergency continues, each House of Congress shall meet to consider a vote on a joint resolution to determine whether that emergency shall be terminated.

David Korten
COMMUNITY AND THE NEW ECONOMY
Why Wall Street can't be fixed and how to replace it

David Korten is the author of the 2009 book: "Agenda for a New Economy" and chair of the board of YES Magazine. He is probably best known for his famous anti-globalization book: When Corporations Rule the World.

He argues that pouring trillions of dollars in bail-out money into the Wall Street institutions that created the crisis does nothing to repair the failed economic system.

In this speech, given in March 2009 at the NW regional conference of  Veterans for Peace, he analyzes two major flaws of the current economic system and points to ways to replace them. One is the monetary system, the other the concept of ever increasing growth, measured as GDP.

THE CERES COMMUNITY PROJECT
A phone conversation with the Executive Director Cathryn Couch and client Katherine Kraemer.
In the California town of Sebastopol high school students meet for two hours after school on a day of their choice to cook organic healing food for people with serious health problems. Named after the Greek goddess of agriculture and generosity, Ceres, this project is almost entirely based on gifts. The teenage volunteers enjoy cooking so much that there is a waiting list. Sonoma County organic farmers donate most of the food, the use of the first kitchen was donated by a church, and volunteers are bringing the prepared dishes to the homes of the clients. These clients, and often their whole family receive a week's worth of beautifully prepared food as gift for up to three months. After that time they are asked to contribute. Their donation to the Ceres Community Project can be as little as $5 a week.

The Ceres Project is young - it started in March of 2007 - but it has touched so many lives, and inspired such gratitude and a kind of generosity that increased fourfold the number of meals provided in 2008. In early 2009 there is already the first attempt to duplicate the project in a neighboring county.

The Ceres Project came to the attention of another community organization, the West Marin radio station KWMR <http://kwmr.org/> and Mike Litchfield, host of the series: Heading Home. When Ceres Project founder Cathryn Couch first appeared on the air the station received so many requests to hear her again that Cathryn came back on the air in March of 2009. Thanks to KWMR and Mike Litchfield for allowing the re-broadcast of the program.

Part ONE: Interview with Cathryn Couch, Executive Director of the Ceres Community Project.
Part TWO: Conversation with Ceres Community Project client Katherine Kraemer who is going through chemotherapy. Cathryn Couch is participating as well.
Both interviews are made by phone. Recorded on March 10, 2009.

ITHACA COMMUNITY MONEY
A history of the ITHACA HOURS community currency
During the Great Depression when banks were closed so they could be audited - over 400 currencies called SCRIPT were used in the US to buy food and services. When the banks reopened, sometimes several months later, SCRIPT was replaced with the federal currency.

Since the beginning of the financial crisis a resurgence of interest in alternative money systems has led to many new initiatives. A new website in the US called mainstreetcash.org is giving an overview over a huge number of community currencies and computer based trading systems with space for comment and discussion.

Featured on that web site are the Ithaca Hours, the oldest printed paper currency in the US. Founded in 1991 by Paul Glover it has been in continuous use, it's popularity rising and diminishing with fluctuations in the overall economy.

Each paper bill is a small piece of art and a commentary on the federal currency. At the top it says: IN ITHACA WE TRUST. - rather than In God We Trust. The currency is issued for the town of Ithaca and the surrounding farms - which means that the money will benefit local  exchanges and local jobs and can never go away as it does when we take dollars to WalMart.

I'm inviting you to re-visit with me one of the most important journeys I have taken as radio reporter, my 1995 visit to Ithaca. Paul Glover, who founded Ithaca Hours in 1991 is still doing community currency work. I spoke to him in March of 2009 to update the information in this program. Marilyn Waring
SEX, LIES AND GLOBAL ECONOMICS

The gross domestic product, the GDP, allegedly is an indicator of the well being of a society. Since powerful forces in banking and public policy are driving attempts to increase growth to solve the 2009 financial crisis it is important to listen to the critics of growth.

The GDP formula was invented by John Maynard Keynes who wrote a pamphlet during World War II entitled: The British National Income and How to Pay for the War. In 1953 that Keynesian set of rules was imposed on everybody.  The rules are called The United Nations System of National Accounts. All countries must use them or they will not be allowed to be a member of the UN, or deal with the World Bank and IMF. These unquestioned rules have been used to make public policy for the last 56 years.

Marilyn Waring says that the GDP system counts only cash transactions in the market. In other words it recognizes no value other than money. This means there is no value to peace to the preservation of the environment, and no value to unpaid work. This system leaves out half the population of the planet and the planet itself.

Marilyn Waring's work and intriguing life is described in a documentary film by Terre Nash. I'm bringing back the soundtrack of this film to support a debate on changing the current National Income Accounting using the GDP.

Marilyn Waring is an author, former member of the New Zealand Parliament, and goat farmer. She is Professor of Public Policy at AUT University in Auckland, New Zealand. The film is distributed by Bullfrog Films in Oley, Pennsylvania.

Paul Grignon
MONEY AS DEBT

An independent movie on the question "Where does money come from?" already has had a huge two year success with well over 2 million viewers on the internet. Now it is seeing another surge of interest because it also explains some of the underpinnings of the current financial crisis.

Money as Debt by the Canadian Paul Grignon makes the case that only a small part of our money is created by the government mint that prints or coins it. The vast majority of money is created by banks whenever a loan or mortgage is made. Banks, which are private institutions, are given enormous power to make and manage money and it is well worth today, in light of the crash of so many banks, to look at the monetary system.

Annie Machon
BEYOND THE WAR ON TERROR

When Annie Machon studied classics at Cambridge University she was recruited by MI5, the British equivalent of the FBI. Machon spent 6 years as an operative against so-called political subversives.

While working for MI5 she and her then partner and colleague David Shayler discovered illegalities and outright crimes committed by their colleagues - both in MI5 and MI6, the British equivalent to the CIA. They ranged from illegal surveillance of labor politicians, and illegal phone tabs, to direct funding of Al Qaeda and false flag operations.

In the mid nineties, when Shayler was the head of the Lybian section at MI5 he worked with the corresponding section in MI6. He learned about their plot to assassinate Colonel Muammar Qaddafi. The plot was funded by MI6 and carried out. Several people were killed, most of them local residents who simply watched the convoy go by. Qaddafi was not hurt.

The assassination plot was the turning point for Machon and Shayler. They resigned from the agency and became whistle blowers. They hoped to initiate a parliamentary investigation into MI5 and MI6 to shed light on the increasing power of spy agencies and the growing immunity of what they call the Secret State. They say that after 9/11 the power of the Secret Sate is being enlarged everywhere and even a change in administration does not appear to roll back that power - not just in Britain, but apparently in the US as well.

While Shayler and Machon were fighting to reign in the MI5 and MI6 they encountered another, even larger complex of lies and secrets. The false information that led to Britain joining the war on Iraq. They joined the peace movement in hopes to alert others to learn from their example and mistrust the information on weapons of mass destruction coming out of the US CIA. Machon explains why she joined the 9/11 truth movement and how many vibrant groups in Europe and Russia are now campaigning for an independent - potentially international - new investigation of the events of 9/11.

Annie Machon was recorded on September 22, 2008 at the College of Marin in Kentfield, CA, by Ken Jenkins and Hummux. Annie Machon mentions two Palestinians jailed on false evidence. They are Samar Alami and Jawad Botme and the web site in their support is <http://www.freesaj.org.uk/>. She also spoke abut Moazzam Begg, Guantanamo, and the web site <http://www.cageprisoners.com/> Machon's web site is: <http://www.anniemachon.com/>

Peter Dale Scott
SAVING AMERICAN POLITICS FROM THE PRESENT TWO-PARTY SYSTEM
The disparity of income and wealth in this country was increased by the first round of bank bail-outs. On Jan. 27, 2009, in front of an audience of Republicans, Scott explained in great detail the necessity to construct future bail-outs to diminish that gap for the sake of democracy. This is a lucid analysis and a well researched guideline for all who want to influence future financial policies.

This is also the only recording of a very unusual event. The San Francisco Republican Round Table crossed party lines and invited Peter Dale Scott. Scott is a former Canadian diplomat and professor of Literature at the University of California, Berkeley. His latest books are: The Road to 9/11: Wealth, Empire, and the Future of America, published in 2007 by the University of California Press, and The War Conspiracy: JFK, 9/11, and the Deep Politics of War, published in 2008 by the Mary Ferrell Foundation Press. His website is <http://www.peterdalescott.net>

The Republican Round Table meets in a SF hotel. About 60 members, some with recognizable names, came to hear him. The only media in attendance were TUC Radio and, as guest, the former Ramparts editor Warren Hinkle accompanied by his basset hound.

Fred Morse
SUN ENGINES AND CONCENTRATED SOLAR POWER (CSP)
A brief history of a carbon free technology that could produce enough electricity to replace coal. CSP was pioneered by US engineers in the late 19th century and lost out to oil and coal.

President Nixon asked Fred Morse whether solar energy made sense for America. His answer was "definitely yes". Fred Morse went on to manage solar energy in the Department of Energy for Presidents Carter and Reagan until 1989 when the programs were dismantled. Today Morse is the senior adviser for US operations for the Spanish firm Abengoa. They operate in over 70 countries and specialize in solar and bio-energy. Abengoa is trying to build the world's largest CSP plant near Phoenix, AZ. <http://www.abengoasolar.com/sites/solar/en/our_projects/usa/arizona/index.html> Coal and nuclear are lobbying hard to retain the lion's share of loan guarantees in the new stimulus package. (
The interview with Morse was recorded on 2008-08-26 in San Francisco/ Washington DC by phone.)

NOTES:
Our foremost climatologist, NASA's James Hansen, has demonstrated that our only hope of getting our atmosphere back to a safe level - below 350 parts per million CO2 - lies in stopping the use of coal to generate electricity.

Hansen points out that policy devices such as emissions reduction targets and cap-and-trade schemes simply will not work because there is already too much CO2 in the air. Much of the carbon dioxide given off by Robert Stephenson’s “Rocket” locomotive in 1829 is still in the atmosphere. Around 20% will still be present in thousands of years. If carbon dioxide continues to be released, even at the reduced rates now proposed, the amounts that remain will continue to build up. With present-day levels already posing real dangers, today’s policies of emissions reduction and carbon trading represent merely a slightly slower road to climate apocalypse. The lesson, Hansen argues, is that the bulk of the Earth’s remaining fossil fuels must be left untouched.

Thanks to Ken Butti and John Perlin whose book: A Golden Thread describes 2500 years of solar architecture and technology. Also to my friend Alex Carlin who first made me aware of CSP - a technology that has been made to lose out against oil and coal for decades - and that now needs it's day in the sun.

James Hansen, NASA: Tell President Obama About Coal River Mountain
<http://www.columbia.edu/%7Ejeh1/mailings/2009/20090203_CoalRiverMountain.pdf>
Coal River Mountain is the site of an absurdity.  I learned about Coal River Mountain from students at Virginia Tech last fall.  They were concerned about Coal River Mountain, but at that time most of them were working to support Barack Obama.  They assumed Barack Obama would not allow such outrages to continue. The issue at Coal River Mountain is whether the top of the mountain will be blown up, so that coal can be dredged out of it, or whether the mountain will be allowed to stand.

Arjun Makhjijani and David Freeman
IS NUCLEAR POWER COMING BACK?
- and do we need a police state to live with it?
Pres. Obama's energy secretary, Steven Chu, says he will streamline loan guarantees to build nuclear and coal fired power plants. This puts nuclear power on the watch list for the Obama administration.

This program features one of the great orators and elders of the anti nuclear movement. David Freeman shut down 8 of their 14 reactors while heading the Tennessee Valley Authority under Pres. Carter. He calls nuclear a failed technology and says that, in the age of terrorism, we need a police state to guard those Trojan horses.

Preceding Freeman's comment you will hear from Dr. Arjun Makhijani. He holds a degree in engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, where he worked on plasma physics and controlled nuclear fusion. He is the principal editor and co-author of NUCLEAR WASTELANDS, the first global assessment of the effects of nuclear weapons production. He addresses the issues of nuclear proliferation and why nuclear technologies have spread in spite of the efforts, begun in the early 1960s to dismantle the existing weapons stockpiles.

Both speakers were attending a November 2005 conference organized by Dr. Helen Caldicott to deter the Bush administration from building new nuclear power plants. This is an updated version as a reminder to the current administration.

This program contains a chilling quote from Sen. Obama indicating that he is aware of the problems associated with nuclear power. (Source: <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xRxl2cVFTLw> "I don't think there is anything that we inevitably dislike about nuclear power - we just dislike the fact that it might blow up and irradiate us and kill us."

WAR ON GAZA

An interview with journalist Jeffrey Blankfort
ISRAEL'S WAR ON GAZA

On January 8 and 9, 2009 the US Senate and House passed resolutions overwhelmingly supporting Israel’s offensive in Gaza. This in the face of growing condemnation of the war on Gaza from another overwhelming majority in the United Nations General Assembly, and in the face of popular outcry not just in Muslim countries but in major cities throughout Europe as well as in the US and Canada.

There is a general consensus that the US is the only country that can bring about a cease fire - given the fact that it is Israel's strongest ally and financier. Yet the governing bodies and political elites in the US remain near unanimous in their support for Israel's actions even though they are increasingly isolated in world opinion.

This interview covers four topics: the elections that led to the victory of Hamas in Gaza, the question of who broke the cease fire, and the so called coup by Hamas which was instead a failed coup against Hamas by US trained Fatah fighters. (See: Vanity Fair) Part two of the interview is dedicated to the most critical issue, the power of the Israel Lobby, its influence in taking the US into the war on Iraq and maintaining support for Israel in Senate and House.

Jeffrey Blankfort is a journalist, former editor of the Middle East Labor Bulletin, and host of "Takes on the World", a twice monthly radio program on foreign affairs on KZYX radio in Northern California. He has reported from Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine and Israel since 1970.

Edward Said:
PALESTINE AND THE UNIVERSALITY OF HUMAN RIGHTS

This is a special tribute on the anniversary of the death of Edward Said who died on September 25, 2003. Friends say that he knew that his life was coming to an end when he gave this legacy address on the eve of the invasion of Iraq.  Said was born in Palestine before the founding of the Jewish State. By 1950 his extended family had all fled Jerusalem for Cairo. Like hundreds of thousands of Palestinians they were displaced by the Jewish state that had been established two years earlier.

THE ETHNIC CLEANSING OF PALESTINE
The daily news on Israel and Palestine is impossible to understand without knowledge of the history of the 1948 expulsion of 3/4 of a million Palestinians by the Jewish army from what then became the state of Israel. When, in 1998, the Israelis opened the military archives it became clear that the Zionist movement had planned to expel the Palestinians long before 1948.

Today Morse is the senior advisor for US operations for the Spanish firm Abengoa. They operate in over 70 countries and specialize in solar and bio-energy. Abengoa is trying to build the world's largest CSP plant near Phoenix, AZ. Coal and nuclear are lobbying hard to retain the lion's share of loan guarantees in the new stimulus package. (
The interview with Morse was recorded on 2008-08-26 in San Francisco/ Washington DC by phone.)

Also to my friend Alex C. who first made me aware of CSP - a technology that has been made to lose out against oil and coal for decades - and that now needs it's day in the sun.

ON ISRAEL'S WAR ON GAZA

I am interrupting my mini-series against nuclear power to present this one hour history of Gaza and analysis of the refusal of the US political elites to bring an end to the war. Traditionally any program critical of Israel has caused my program, on some stations, to be taken off the air or moved to a bad night-time slot. Please resist pressure from those who refuse an open debate on Israel and watch for TUC Radio and let me know if it disappears.

Nuclear waste and routine releases from nuclear reactors
IS NUCLEAR POWER COMING BACK?

When the anti nuclear campaigner Dr. Helen Caldicott called on leading scientists and policy makers to debunk the claims that nuclear power plants needed to be built to halt climate change, she was aiming at the Bush administration. It now appears that plans to bring back nuclear power are bipartisan and not restricted to the US either. So it is time to revisit the arguments and remember the passionate campaigns of the 60s and 70s that stopped the building of new nuclear power plants in the US and even raised hopes for the abolition of nuclear weapons.

The first speaker, Rep. Ed Markey, Mass, said that the 1979 accident at Three Mile Island was the beginning of the end of nuclear power in the US. Within a year Markey, Helen Caldicott and others introduced the nuclear freeze resolution into the House of Representatives. Sen. Kennedy introduced it into the Senate. They made the linkage between nuclear weapons, nuclear power and nuclear proliferation, a linkage that still exists today.

Proponents of nuclear power claim that nuclear plants are emission free. That is not true. All nuclear power plants release radioactive substances into air and water during their day to day operations. Kay Drey is a member of the board of directors of Beyond Nuclear. She has worked for 30 years to protect the public, workers and the environment from the hazards of nuclear power and radioactive waste. In 1996 she chaired a statewide campaign in Missouri, her home state, that led to the cancellation of a nuclear reactor then under construction. She also led the successful campaign against the construction of a permanent disposal bunker at the St. Louis Airport for uranium and thorium wastes generated during the production of atomic weapons in the 1940s and ‘50s.

Kay Drey and Ed Markey spoke at a two day conference in November 2005 called by the internationally known anti nuclear campaigner Helen Caldicott to deter the Bush administration from funding new nuclear power plants. I am bringing back the highlight of that November 2005 conference since nuclear power projects are still part of the energy mix.

IS NUCLEAR POWER COMING BACK?

A four-part mini-series based on a briefing, on November 7 and 8, 2005, organized by Dr. Helen Caldicott.

IN MEMORIAM
Harold Pinter died in London on December 24, 2008. This is a re-mastered, carefully edited version of the original 46 minute speech.
Pinter was too ill to travel to Stockholm to accept the Nobel Prize. This is a 2005 studio recording of a powerful voice, struggling to be heard.
The video was played at the ceremony and distributed world-wide via the internet and other independent media.
Not even the BBC dared play it during daytime.

Harold Pinter
ART, TRUTH & POLITICS

When Harold Pinter won the 2005 Nobel Prize in Literature, he used his acceptance speech on December 7 to launch a blistering attack on George Bush and the British government, and a challenge to the conscience of people to not stand by in the face of Bush's crimes.

Harold Pinter was born in October 1930 in East London. He was a playwright, director, actor, poet and political activist. He has written twenty-nine plays including The Birthday Party, The Caretaker, The Homecoming, and Betrayal, and twenty-one screenplays including The French Lieutenant's Woman and The Handmaid's Tale, a chilling expose of what life would be like for women under a Christian fascist regime in America.

Pinter's interest in politics was a very public one. His biographer Michael Billington said: "Pinter remains, to his credit, a permanent public nuisance, a questioner of accepted truths, both in life and art." Pinter was an outspoken endorser of the call The World Can't Wait, Drive Out the Bush Regime.

HELEN CALDICOTT
Nuclear Power is not the Answer
Grand Round lecture by the Australian pediatrician, anti nuclear campaigner, and Nobel Prize nominee Dr. Helen Caldicott at Oakland Children's Hospital, CA. This is a personal and passionate appeal to doctors to inform the public and politicians about the proven effects of radiation that the medical profession has studied and treated for so long.

Helen Caldicott covers radiation dangers from each stage of the nuclear fuel chain, from uranium mining, depleted uranium, to the fissioning of the fuel rods inside the nuclear reactor. She talks about Alpha and Gamma rays, isotopes, half lives and which parts of the human body are affected by various forms of radiation.

This is a response to the international effort to bring back nuclear power under the guise of holding off climate change. Helen Caldicott explains that nuclear power is not emission free, it is dangerous in all it's phases, and expensive. Unlike renewable wind and solar energy nuclear power will not come on line fast enough to make a difference, a difference that is needed now, not in 15 years.

For over 35 years Helen Caldicott has led the international efforts to educate the public about the dangers of nuclear power and weapons and has been named one of the most influential women of the 20th century by the Smithsonian Institute. She has written numerous books, among them Nuclear Power is not the Answer (2006)and War in Heaven: The Arms Race in Outer Space (2007) Helen Caldicott has begun producing a free, weekly one hour radio program entitled: If You Love This Planet. Her site is <http://www.ifyoulovethisplanet.org>

In September 2008 Helen Caldicott did a phone interview with her friend and colleague, Dr. Kate Hudson, chair of the CND, the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. The CND, active since 1958, is making a renewed and very well received effort to remove nuclear weapons from Britain and to stop the recent plans to build new nuclear power plants. Kate Hudson is a long time peace activist and the chair of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament in England. She is also Head of Social and Policy Studies at London South Bank University and edits the journal Contemporary Politics.  She has written several books including: CND - Now More Than Ever: The Story of a Peace Movement

ROBERT FISK
The Age of the Warrior

Fisk is Britain’s most celebrated foreign correspondent and has been named International Journalist of the Year seven times. He is currently the Middle East correspondent for The Independent of London and has covered eleven major wars in over three decades. He lives in Beirut and was one of only two journalists who had the courage to remain there through the duration of the Lebanese civil war. I filmed him at his most recent, rare, visit to the US as he spoke in front of a capacity audience in Berkeley, CA. He was greeted with a standing ovation.

Anybody writing on current events or making policy decisions for the Middle East needs to take Fisk's analysis into account. Fisk argues for an immediate troop withdrawal, both from Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Age of the Warrior, his most recent book, is a collection of essays from his paper, The Independent. Robert Fisk's previous books include Pity the Nation and The Great War for Civilization. He spoke at a benefit for the Middle East Children’s Alliance in Berkeley, CA, on September 25, 2008. Fisk is a captivating speaker who supports his arguments with reports from war zones where few dare to tread and a wealth of historic examples.

MICHAEL PARENTI
Contrary Notions

City Light books in San Francisco's North Beach was filled to capacity for the book party of Michael Parenti's most recent work: Contrary Notions. This is a rich selection from the writings of a life time on history, empire, wealth, class power, ideology and much more. Parenti goes where few political analysts dare to go and - with acerbic wit -  makes transparent how he arrives at his conclusions. This excerpt of his 45 minute talk addresses taboo subjects such as the murder of the town of New Orleans and 9/11.
This is a highly professional recording by Brightpath Video of Parenti in an intimate book store setting on January 22, 2008.

MICHAEL PARENTI
The JFK Assassination and the Gangster Nature of the State
When Oliver Stone’s movie JFK opened in December 1991 a huge PR campaign was mobilized against the film. Even progressives spoke out. Noam Chomsky wrote in support of the Warren Commission's findings – in contrast Michael Parenti gave one of his highly acclaimed talks criticizing the lone assassin theory. The bitter questions that haunted defenders and critics alike was whether government agencies of a democratic country would do such a thing as assassinate an elected President.

In this talk Michael Parenti turns to that question first – he examines, in part one, what he calls “the gangster nature of the state.” In part two he goes over details of the assassination and critiques The Nation, The Progressive, Chomsky and Cockburn. He spoke in Berkeley, CA, on the 30th anniversary of the JFK assassination.

This is one of many "standing ovations" talks by Parenti. The master for this program was lost and this appears to be the only copy of the original recording.

Michael Parenti
DIVERSITY AND ORTHODOXY IN THE NEWS MEDIA
This August 28, 2008 analysis of the media is Parenti's most up-to-date contribution. He gave the keynote speech for the Modern Media Censorship lectures by Project Censored. Each year Project Censored <http://www.projectcensored.org/> gives awards for the most censored news stories of the year. Parenti lists important criteria by which to judge media bias, ranging from ownership to labeling, false objectivity and sensationalism, omission, outright lies and the denial of causality with the famous theory of "stuff happens".

Michael Parenti has written an lectured on the mainstream media for decades. His key book on the topic is "Inventing Reality - The politics of the News Media."

Michael Parenti
CAPITALISM'S APOCALYPSE
Why the rich can't save anybody - not even themselves

Parenti predicted the financial crisis and said that giant corporate capitalism - by it's very nature - is an apocalyptic system. When unregulated the built in elements of ever increased growth may well bring the whole system down. And he described the growing national debt not as a tragic mistake but as a means to shift ever more money from the tax payers to the financial institutions in the form of interest payments. This speech is an analysis of the many structural flaws of a capitalist system that puts it on a permanent collision course with democracy.

Cockburn had come down from Petrolia in Humboldt County to give a pithy, provocative assessment of the presidential candidates. There is not enough time to place this speech into radio distribution before the November 4 deadline - but i want to do my best to get his opinions on the financial crisis and the candidates McCain and Obama to the widest possible audience via the internet and this web site. Here are three sound files:

Michael Parenti: CONSPIRACY & CLASS POWER
One of Parenti's most influential archival speeches

This is an in-depth analysis of the modern state and the exercise of power behind the scenes. The speech is also an important historic document. Given in 1993 it issues a warning of the use of deception to justify going to war. The speech also explains the expansion of the deregulated free market that would lead to a financial crisis as we see it today.

The speech on Conspiracy and Class Power was lost for several years and only recently discovered in the collection of a listener in Seattle.  Michael Parenti spoke before an overflow audience in Berkeley, CA

Michael Parenti is an internationally known author and lecturer. He received his Ph.D. in political science from Yale in 1962 and is one of the nation's leading progressive political thinkers.  His highly informative and entertaining books and talks have reached a wide range of audiences in North America and abroad. His books include Democracy for the Few, Superpatriotism, The Assassination of Julius Caesar, History as Mystery, and Contrary Notions.

Bill McKibben on DEEP ECONOMY
A talk and conversation with Michael Pollan

Bill McKibben’s book: ‘The End of Nature’ is regarded as the first book for a general audience about climate change. Published in 1989, it has been printed in more than 20 languages.  He has since written on localization, alternative energy, and the risks associated with human genetic engineering. In his most recent book: ‘Deep Economy: The Wealth of Communities and the Durable Future’ he envisions a transition to local-scale enterprise.

McKibben and his family live in Vermont. He is a scholar in residence at Middlebury College where he launched the campaign: stepitup2007, demanding that global warming pollution be cut 80 percent by 2050. McKibben spoke in Berkeley in March 2007. The church was filled to capacity with an enthusiastic crowd. He was joined on stage by a colleague and fellow author, Michael Pollan, author of “The Omnivore's Dilemma”, and “Botany of Desire”.

Dr. Lonnie Thompson
ABRUPT CLIMATE CHANGE AND OUR FUTURE

Dr. Thompson issues a warning that the mountain glaciers he knows and loves are melting ever more dramatically just within the year of 2007. He is the leading expert on glaciers with 30 years of on location research.

Dr. Lonnie Thompson saw one of the first ice cores that was recovered from a glacier when he was in graduate school. He was fascinated by the amount of data on earth history, past climate and world changing events that can be read from these ice cores and made the exploration of ice his life's work. He now teaches in the Department of Geological Sciences and is Senior Research Scientists at the Byrd Polar Center at Ohio State University.

In three decades he has explored most of the mountain glaciers of this world, has learned their history going back tens of thousands of years via the ice cores he and his team drilled at altitudes that no helicopter can reach. He came to San Francisco in early December 2007 to issue this warning.

Thompson was the honored speaker at the December 2007 meeting of the American Geophysical Union. The hotel where Dr. Thompson spoke recorded the event for the AGU. This is the only other audio or visual record of this amazing talk.

Professor Said was known as both a scholar of modern literature and an expert on Middle Eastern politics. Educated at Princeton and Harvard he taught at Columbia.  His books, which have been translated into 36 languages, include: Covering Islam, and The Politics of Dispossession. He was born in Palestine before the founding of the Jewish State. By 1950 his extended family had all fled Jerusalem for Cairo. Like hundreds of thousands of Palestinians they were displaced by the Jewish state that had been established two years earlier.

Richard Grossman
WHEN INJUSTICE IS LEGAL
WHAT DO THE ABOLITIONISTS TEACH US ABOUT CHALLENGING CORPORATE RULE

Grossman describes how corporations usurped many of the rights that are properly due to human beings and have become the dominant institutions or our time – and how that dominance needs to be challenged in the constitutional arena.

He proposes how to bring about the changes in self-governance, be it energy, agriculture, transportation, peace or environmental protection by directly challenging the law.

Richard Grossman is co-founder of CELDF, the Community Legal Defense Fund. CELDF was formed to provide free and affordable legal services to community-based groups and local governments working to protect their quality of life and the natural environment. They help mount campaigns that challenge the legal clout of corporations to overrule decisions made by citizens for their communities and for a sustainable future. <http://www.celdf.org/>

Alex Carey: Corporations and Propaganda
The Attack on Democracy

Alex Carey said that the people of the US have been subjected to an unparalleled, expensive, 3/4 century long propaganda effort designed to expand corporate rights by undermining democracy and destroying the unions. The 20th century, he wrote, is marked by three historic developments: the growth of democracy via the expansion of the franchise, the growth of corporations, and the growth of propaganda to protect corporations from democracy. Carey’s unique view of US history goes back to World War I and ends with the Reagan era.

Noam Chomsky dedicated his book “Manufacturing Consent” to the memory of Alex Carey. Chomsky says that the Australian sociologist would have written the definitive history of propaganda in the US, had he lived to complete his work. This is a fairly complex production with many voices, historic sound clips, and source material. The program has been used by writers and students of history and propaganda. Alex Carey: Taking the Risk out of Democracy, Corporate Propaganda VS Freedom and Liberty with a foreword by Noam Chomsky was published by the University of Illinois Press in 1995.

John Nichols
THE IMPEACHMENT OF BUSH AND CHENEY
This is a repeat of Nichols' popular November 2006 talk, a contribution to the renewed debate on impeachment.
The acclaimed author, Washington correspondent for the Nation, and media critic John Nichols wrote a book entitled: The Genius of Impeachment. The author Studs Terkel said about this book: "Never within my memory has the case for impeachment of Bush and his equally crooked confederates been so clearly and fervently offered as John Nichols has done in this book. They are after all our public SERVANTS who have rifled our savings, bled our young, and challenged our sanity. And Nichols has given us the history, the language and the arguments we will need to do so."

John Nichols had come to San Francisco just before the November 2006 election to urge the group of friends who had gathered to meet him that the real political work was to begin on the day after the election. And that work would be – he suggested - to bring about the impeachment of Bush and Cheney.
Recorded by Maria Gilardin in San Francisco, November 1, 2006.

SPECIAL - given the continued threats of attacks on IRAN
Daniel Ellsberg
THE THREAT OF WAR ON IRAN

When Daniel Ellsberg released the Pentagon Papers in 1971 they revealed the US Government's lies about the war on Vietnam. 35 years later Ellsberg received the Right Livelihood Award, the so-called alternative Nobel Price, for “… dedicating his life to inspiring others to follow his example.”

For the last 6 years Ellsberg has campaigned against the exercise of executive power by the Bush administration. He calls for action to end such Presidential violation of the constitution and to prevent an expansion of the war in the Middle East and an attack on Iran. He urges government insiders to come up with the new set of Pentagon papers, to act now and not wait until they write their memoirs. The American public needs to see the current attack plans on Iran in order to prevent a terrible expansion of the war in the Middle East.

He voices criticism of the new democratic congress and their support – with few exceptions - of the Kyl/Lieberman amendment of Sept. 2007. This bill designated the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization. Opponents of the amendment are saying that it could be used by Bush to attack Iran.

Daniel Ellsberg spoke on December 18, 2007, at the Republican Round Table in a downtown hotel in San Francisco.

Church and military records show that in the early 19th century California's forests were not "wild" but carefully tended. The catastrophic wildfires of today were extremely rare. Dennis Martinez talks about Indian forest practice and restoration.

The forest at the Mountain Grove Center For New Education, near Glendale in SW Oregon was clear-cut in the 1930s and 40s. It has come back thick, young, and dark. When Indians cared for the land the old growth incense cedars and chinquapins were spaced widely, plants thrived on the sun-lit forest floor, and animals found shelter and food. Dennis Martinez knows about Indian forest practice and was restoring this land when I interviewed him in 1996.

The Day the WTO Stood Still
A TUC Radio Archives program

SUMMARY:
Mass media claim that food insecurity, climate change, environmental degradation are natural processes. We say that the global economic system is at fault. Voices calling for the re-design of NAFTA & WTO are getting louder.

NOTES: We are being told that climate change, species extinction and environmental degradation are natural processes. That the rising cost of food and gas are due to fluctuation in a market economy that will eventually level off. As we are trying to respond to one crisis after another we are being prevented from recognizing the powers behind the scenes.

At this crucial moment it is worth remembering that the rules of the game were changed with the founding of the World Trade Organization in 1995. The first challenge to the WTO occurred in Seattle in 1999. This program from the TUC Radio archives brings you some of the visionary voices who foresaw the consequences that we are facing today. Then they were lone voices. Today a growing movement is calling for a radical re-design of trade rules. A new poll from the Pew Research Center finds that a majority of Americans now oppose trade agreements such as NAFTA and the WTO. In the 2006 election 37 congressional challengers replaced NAFTA-supporting incumbents.

The International Forum on Globalization, the IFG, helped organize the resistance to the WTO leading up to Seattle and beyond. The speakers in this program are affiliated with the IFG:
Maude Barlow is national chair of the Council of Canadians, Canada's largest public advocacy organization, and founder of the Blue Planet Project. She was one of the first activists to call attention to the fact that a handful of corporations are gaining control of water world wide. She has co-authored an international bestseller Blue Gold. Her newest book: The Blue Covenant, was published in 2008.

Jose Bové is a goat farmer from the South of France and member of the Confédération Paysanne. He had become aware of the power of the WTO when trade sanctions were imposed on French cheese, including his own roquefort. He went on to become a folk hero in France for opposing MacDonalds and genetically modified seeds. He ran in the first round of presidential elections in 2007, garnering almost 1/2 million votes.

Dr. Mae-Wan Ho is a geneticist, biophysicist and director of the non profit Institute of Science in Society. With more than 30 years of research and teaching in biochemistry, evolution, and molecular genetics, she has become an eloquent critic of genetic engineering. Mae-Wan Ho has authored or co-authored 10 books, such as The Rainbow and the Worm, the Physics of Organisms, Genetic Engineering Dream or Nightmare?, and: Living with the Fluid Genome.

The Indian physicist and ecologist Vandana Shiva founded the Research Foundation for Science, Technology and Ecology, in 1982. She co-founded Navdanya to promote biodiversity conservation, organic farming, the rights of farmers, and the process of seed saving. Shiva has participated in the movements to save the forests (Chipko) to prevent the flooding of land by hydro projects, and the impositions of genetically modified seeds. Shiva's books include Biopiracy, Stolen Harvest, Monocultures of the Mind, and Water Wars. Her many awards include the Right Livelihood Award, also known as the "Alternative Nobel Peace Prize."

David Ray Griffin: 9/11 Contradictions
A guide to Congress and the press
