David Ray Griffin: 9/11 Contradictions
A guide to Congress and the press
David Ray Griffin's most recent book: 9/11 Contradictions, was published in March 2008. The book, and this speech, take a new approach to finding the truth about the events of 9/11. It focuses entirely on contradictory statements made by members of the Bush administration, government departments and agencies, and the 9/11 Commission. All the statements examined by Griffin are official claims in direct conflict with other official claims. How could this be? And why, if the government pronouncements are contradictory, haven't members of Congress and the mainstream media launched investigations to determine which stories are true and which are false?

Griffin begins with two official White House versions of the timeline at George W. Bush's stay at the Florida school on the morning of 9/11. He also covers Osama bin Laden. To this day he is named the instigator of the 9/11 attacks. Griffin examines the absence of hard evidence for bin Laden's involvement.

The retired theologian David Ray Griffin is one of the foremost authors in the movement that is challenging the official story of the events of 9/11. His most important books are: The New Pearl Harbor, disturbing questions about the Bush administration and 9-11; The 9-11 Commission Report: Omissions and Distortions; and Debunking 9/11 Debunking: An Answer to Popular Mechanics and Other Defenders of the Official Conspiracy Theory. Microwave Radiation, the shadow side of the wireless revolution
The BIOINITIATIVE REPORT

Moved by the mounting evidence of dangerous health effects of radio-frequency radiation and electromagnetic fields a group of internationally acclaimed scientists collaborated on the August 2007 Bioinitiative report. They reviewed over 2000 research publications and raise concerns about the safety of existing public limits that regulate how much exposure is allowable from power lines, mobile phones, and other electronic devices.

The report received prominent notice in the European press but was ignored by the US commercial media. The Environmental Agency of the European Union contributed to the report with a section on the need to apply the precautionary principle. The EU agency supports the demand to come up with new and stricter public exposure standards for electromagnetic fields.

Contributors to the Bioinitiative report gave a presentation at the San Francisco Commonwealth Club on March 19, 2008. Among the speakers are: Dr. Bill Grant, member of the Commonwealth Club’s health and medicine forum; Dr. Magda Havas, Associate Professor of Environmental and Resource Studies at Trent University, Canada; Cindy Sage, environmental consultant and co-editor of the Bioinitiative Report; and Dr. David Carpenter, Professor of Environmental Health Sciences and Director of the Institute for Health and the Environment at the School of Public Health at the University of Albany, NY. SOLUTIONS TO THE GLOBAL TRIPLE CRISIS
In September of 2007 the International Forum on Globalization held a Teach-in in Washington DC on climate change, peak oil, global resource depletion & extinction. At the end of the three-day event proposals to resolve the crisis were made By Ross Gelbspan, Susan George, and Walden Bello.

Ross Gelbspan is a Pulitzer Price winning journalist, climate activist and author of The Heat Is On and Boiling Point. He says that the speed of global warming has blind sided all of us. The first warning by James Hansen came in 1988. 20 years later scientists tell us we are at, or have passed, the point of no return. All this came from one degree of warming. We can no longer burn coal and oil. Susan George is chair of the planning board of the Transnational Institute, <www.tni.org>. One of her recent books is: Another World is possible if.. (Verso 2004) Susan George proposes a new Keynesianism, not military but environmental this time, that could bring about a massive conversion to eco friendly industry and alternative energies and resolve the looming recession that we are facing at the same time. Walden Bello is professor of sociology at the university of the Philippines and leader of the anti corporate globalization and peace movement. He is cofounder of Focus on the Global South, <www.focusweb.org> based in Bangkok, Thailand. His book, Dragons in Distress, is widely regarded as the classic that predicted the collapse of the East Asian economies later in that decade.” He puts the triple crisis in the context of capitalism and the policies of globalization and growth. An 8 to 10% growth rate is ecologically criminal.

CONFRONTING THE GLOBAL TRIPLE CRISIS
False Solutions to Peak Oil and Climate Change
In September of 2007 the International Forum on Globalization held a Teach in Washington DC on climate change, peak oil and global resource depletion & extinction. <http://www.ifg.org>

Several Panel meetings addressed the many false solutions to the climate crisis that may be accelerating the danger rather than alleviating it. Coal for example is now promoted as a substitute for oil and promises for the capture of the carbon are made that are not yet possible with current technologies and may never be available on a large scale.

Dr. Hermann Ott is head of the Berlin office of the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy. He is the co-author of the book: The Kyoto Protocol International Climate Policy for the 21st Century. From the Appalachian mountains came Mary Anne Hitt. She lives and works at the center of one of the large unreported ecological tragedies of out time. In surface mines, some the size of New York's Manhattan, whole mountain ranges are blown off to strip mine the coal. Mary Anne Hitt is Executive Director of Appalachian Voices. Jutta Kill is a climate campaigner and activist for FERN, an NGO based in Europe. A participant in the Durban Group's critique of carbon trading she eloquently describes how the system favors large corporations and will prevent a transition to renewable energy production. Dr. Arjun Makhijani argues against the resurgence of nuclear power. He holds a Ph.D. in engineering, specializing in nuclear fusion, from U.C. Berkeley. He is the principal author of the first study ever done (and completed in 1971) on the energy conservation potential in the U.S. economy.

On occasion of the 40th anniversary of King's murder
WHO KILLED MARTIN LUTHER KING?
Dr. William Pepper at the Memphis, TN, King Assassination Trial
(This program contains archival recordings never heard before.)
In 1977 the family of Martin Luther King engaged an attorney and friend, Dr. William Pepper, to investigate a suspicion they had. They no longer believed that James Earl Ray was the killer. For their peace of mind, for an accurate record of history, and out of a sense of justice they conducted a two decade long investigation. The evidence they uncovered was put before a jury in Memphis, TN, in November 1999. 70 witnesses testified under oath, 4,000 pages of transcripts described that evidence, much of it new. It took the jury 59 minutes to come back with their decision that exonerated James Earl Ray, who had already died in prison. The jury found that Loyd Jowers, owner of Jim's Grill, had participated in a conspiracy to kill King. The evidence showed that the conspiracy included J. Edgar Hoover and the FBI, Richard Helms and the CIA, the military, the Memphis police department, and organized crime.

The finding of the jury should have shaken the world. However news of the verdict, in one of the most important national security trials in modern history, was suppressed. And to this day, with very few exceptions, the public does not know that this trial took place and what the outcome was.

This TUC Radio program presents an archival recording never before heard: Key parts of the closing argument in the courtroom in Memphis on December 8, 1999, by Dr. William Pepper. He describes why King had become dangerous to the powers to be, parts of the local conspiracy, and the cover-up. For over 5 years, seniors from a retirement home rally against the war. Nobody on this program is younger than 70, many are in their nineties. They come in wheelchairs and walkers, their wit, energy, critical thinking and memory of past wars is inspiring. Among them are a former nurse for combat flyers in W.W.II and a woman who survived five years of bombing in Holland.

Cynthia McKinney
CONFRONTING EMPIRE
The former Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney was invited to England in September 2007. She spoke about Martin Luther King and the plans for him to become the running mate of Bobbie Kennedy in his bid for the US presidency.

She was introduced by Annie Machon who quit her job at the British spy agency MI5 in protest over MI5 plans to assassinate the Libyan leader Muammar Gadafy.

In 1992 Cynthia McKinney made history when she became the first African American woman to represent Georgia in the United States House of Representatives.

McKinney voted against record Bush administration military budgets, and challenged the Pentagon to explain how it "lost" over $2.3 trillion in un-traceable transactions. She continues to decry the Bush administration's sweetheart deals with Halliburton, the Carlyle Group, and DynCorp; and she speaks out against the loss of fundamental freedoms under the Bush administration.

McKinney lost her congressional seat when an estimated 40,000 Republicans voted in the Georgia Democratic Primary to oust her. It is called "crossover" voting and her supporters filed a lawsuit against this practice.

Dr. James Hansen
THE THREAT TO THE PLANET
How can we avoid dangerous human-made climate change
Dr. James Hansen is one of the few scientists who have consistently warned that the impact that humans have on the climate is bringing about changes that are faster than we ever believed and may be irreversible if action is not taken now. Hansen is Director of the NASA Institute for Space Studies in New York City, and he teaches at Columbia. Since the late 1970s, he has worked on studies of the Earth's climate. He has run afoul of government censors since the 1980s. Repeatedly his testimony before Congress was suppressed or re-written.

Hansen says that the unprecedented and rising amounts of greenhouse gases added each year AND the speed at which we are altering the energy balance of the earth are completely out of the range of proven earth history of hundreds of thousands of years. Hansen fears that we may soon be reaching feedback mechanism or tipping points such as the melting of the ice sheets that has already begun on Greenland and West Antarctica.

In part one of this program Hansen gives a fascinating account of the earth's climate history, in part two he talks about solutions. Dr. Hansen's work - including the slide projections for this talk, can be found at <http://www.columbia.edu/~jeh1>

WITNESS TO THE MELTING OF GREENLAND
An Inuit elder speaks
Recorded in a tent during a rainstorm

in the Valley of the Ancients on Greenland.

For two weeks a small group of five constructed the ceremonial fire pit for the 2008 second circumpolar meeting. Inuits from Canada, Greenland, Siberia and Alaska, who live along the Arctic Circle, will gather again to consult on how to alert the world to the enormous changes in climate that they are experiencing already, changes that are forcing them now to fundamentally alter their lives. The accelerating melt of the Greenland ice cap may eventually lead to sea level rises around the world up to 7 meters or 21 feet, drowning the cities of London and New York.

The Inuit elders, who had chosen the ceremonial site, were joined by two North Americans and one Canadian. They pitched their tents on the tundra below towering rock mountains and the glacier behind. In the distance a river, swollen by the accelerating melt, discharged mud and boulders into the ocean. Lakes of melt-water are forming on the top of the ice cap and that water has found its way to the bottom, causing the glaciers to slide faster and swelling the rivers.

After five days the group got weathered in for 24 hours in fierce cold and driving rain. Cien Fuegos, the North American, invited Ithluk to tell her about Greenland and how the Inuit are experiencing the change of the climate.

Richard Grossman
WHEN INJUSTICE IS LEGAL
WHAT DO THE ABOLITIONISTS TEACH US ABOUT CHALLENGING CORPORATE RULE
Grossman describes how corporations usurped many of the rights that are properly due to human beings and have become the dominant institutions or our time – and how that dominance needs to be challenged in the constitutional arena.

He proposes how to bring about the changes in self-governance, be it energy, agriculture, transportation, peace or environmental protection by directly challenging the law.

John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt
THE ISRAEL LOBBY AND U.S. FOREIGN POLICY
John Mearsheimer of the University of Chicago and Stephen Walt of Harvard, have written one of the most controversial articles in recent memory. ‘The Israel Lobby,’ originally published in the London Review of Books and on the web in March 2006, examined one of the most taboo issues in America: the impact of the Israel lobby on U.S. policy.

The authors say that “the response to the essay was breathtaking. Three month after the posting the (web site) recorded more than 275,000 downloads”. There was also a media campaign condemning the article and the authors in the Jerusalem Post, New York Sun, Wall Street Journal, New Republic and Washington Post.

Now Mearsheimer and Walt have expanded the essay into a 500 page book entitled, The Israel Lobby and US Foreign Policy. They argue that the policies encouraged by the lobby are profoundly damaging to both America's national interest and Israel's own long-term security.

Mearsheimer and Walt spoke in Berkeley, CA, on September 19, 2007 at an event organized by Tikkun magazine and Cody’s books. Introduction by Rabbi Michael Lerner in Part TWO.

Edward Said:
PALESTINE AND THE UNIVERSALITY OF HUMAN RIGHTS
This is a special tribute on the anniversary of the death of Edward Said. Friends say that he knew that his life was coming to an end when he gave this legacy address on the eve of the invasion of Iraq.

Professor Said was known as both a scholar of modern literature and an expert on Middle Eastern politics. Educated at Princeton and Harvard he taught at Columbia. His books, which have been translated into 36 languages, include: Covering Islam, and The Politics of Dispossession. He was born in Palestine before the founding of the Jewish State. By 1950 his extended family had all fled Jerusalem for Cairo. Like hundreds of thousands of Palestinians they were displaced by the Jewish state that had been established two years earlier.

A FAREWELL TO JUSTICE
Jim Garrison, John F. Kennedy's Assassination,
and the Case That Should Have Changed History
- a new investigation of the assassination

New Orleans district attorney Jim Garrison was the only public official to have indicted a suspect in President John F. Kennedy’s murder. Biographer Joan Mellen met Garrison in 1969. His relentless search for the truth about who killed President Kennedy made a deep impression upon her. In 1997, five years after Garrison's death, Mellen started to work on the story of his life. Her biography turned into a new investigation of the assassination itself.
Joan Mellen spoke in New York in January 2006 - a few weeks after the release of her book: A Farewell to Justice. She found new evidence in the National Archives' JFK Assassination Records Collection and conducted more than one thousand interviews, with many witnesses speaking out for the first time. Joan Mellen names those responsible for the assassination and shows how the cover-up began in New Orleans months before President Kennedy was shot in Dallas.

Joan Mellen is professor of English and creative writing at Temple University in Philadelphia. She is the author of seventeen books, ranging from film criticism to fiction, Latin American studies and biography.

MICHAEL PARENTI
The JFK Assassination and the Gangster Nature of the State
When Oliver Stone's movie JFK opened in December 1991 a huge PR campaign was mobilized against the film. Even progressives spoke out. Noam Chomsky wrote in support of the Warren Commission's findings – in contrast Michael Parenti gave one of his highly acclaimed talks criticizing the lone assassin theory.

The bitter questions that haunted defenders and critics alike was whether government agencies of a democratic country would do such a thing as assassinate an elected President.

In this talk Michael Parenti turns to that question first – he examines, in part one, what he calls “the gangster nature of the state.” In part two he goes over details of the assassination and critiques The Nation, The Progressive, Chomsky and Cockburn. He spoke in Berkeley, CA, on the 30th anniversary of the JFK assassination.

This is one of many "standing ovations" talks by Parenti. The master for this program was lost and this appears to be the only copy of the original recording.

Interviews with DR. JAMES HANSEN, NASA and DR. HERMANN SCHEER,
World Council for Renewable Energy and member of the German Parliament

Dr. James Hansen is one of the few climate scientists who has consistently warned that the impact that humans have on the climate is bringing about changes that are faster than we ever believed and maybe irreversible if action is not taken now. Hansen is Director of the NASA Institute for Space Studies in New York City, a division of the Goddard Space Flight Center. <http://www.giss.nasa.gov/> Since the late 1970s, he has worked on studies and computer simulations of the Earth's climate.

Hansen has run afoul of government censors since the 1980s when he was asked to testify before Congress. He found that the record of his testimony had been re-written. His testimony to Vice President Cheney and other cabinet members in 2001 was ignored. In early 2006 officials at NASA headquarters ordered the public affairs staff to review Hansen’s coming lectures, papers, postings on the Goddard Web site and requests for interviews from journalists.

Dr. Hermann Scheer
A large industrialized country already gets 10% of their electricity from renewable sources. And if the present rate of conversion is maintained, this country will have phased out nuclear and fossil fuels within the next 50 years. And this country, Germany, is not even blessed with abundant wind or sun. Germany, for 15 years now, has shown the determinations to move away from centralized to decentralized power, from commercial to non-commercial energy production, and to come up with solutions to climate change, peak oil and the dangers of nuclear power. <http://www.german-renewable-energy.com/Renewables/Navigation/Englisch/root.html>

At the root of these developments is the German Renewable Energy Act, the EEG. It started as a one page act passed by the German parliament in 1990. It was simple and based on three concepts: Free access to the grid to all producers, the obligation for utilities to purchase, and guaranteed fixed prices for each producer in accordance with their cost of production and state of technology. The lead author of the Renewable Energy Act is Dr. Hermann Scheer, chairman of the World Council for Renewable Energy, now serving his 6th term as elected member of the German Parliament.

John Nichols
THE IMPEACHMENT OF BUSH AND CHENEY
San Francisco, November 1, 2006.
The acclaimed author, Washington correspondent for the Nation, and media critic John Nichols wrote a new book entitled: The Genius of Impeachment. The author Studs Terkel said about this book: "Never within my memory has the case for impeachment of Bush and his equally crooked confederates been so clearly and fervently offered as John Nichols has done in this book. They are after all our public SERVANTS who have rifled our savings, bled our young, and challenged our sanity. And Nichols has given us the history, the language and the arguments we will need to do so."

John Nichols had come to San Francisco just before the November 2006 election to urge the group of friends and activist that had gathered to meet him that the real political work was to begin on the day after the election. And that work will be – he suggested - to bring about the impeachment of Bush and Cheney.

At an event in San Francisco attorneys Michael Ratner and Lynne Stewart spoke about what it means to do political legal work – exclusively and for many, many years. And how that work, in the case of Lynne Stewart, may lead to government action and the attempt to put her in prison for her work as an attorney, for 30 years.

Michael Ratner is President of the Center for Constitutional Rights often heard on Democracy Now on behalf of the prisoners in Guantanamo and his attempts to hold Donald Rumsfeld criminally responsible. Lynne Stewart represented the blind Egyptian cleric Sheikh Omar Abdel-Rahman and has been accused of helping terrorists by passing on a press release by him to the media. In her long career as movement attorney, Stewart has defended Black Liberation activists, Weather Underground people and many who were too poor to afford a lawyer. (Recorded in February 2007)

Ilan Pappe
Part ONE: THE ETHNIC CLEANSING OF PALESTINE
The daily news on Israel and Palestine is impossible to understand without knowledge of the history of the 1948 expulsion of 3/4 of a million Palestinians by the Jewish army from what then became the state of Israel. Even though he had written two books on that period, the Israeli historian Ilan Pappe still felt haunted by the story. When, in 1998, the Israelis opened the military archives it became clear that the Zionist movement had planned to expel the Palestinians long before 1948. In 2006 Ilan Pappe published his most recent book: The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine. He spoke about his work at the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands in January 2007.

After years of being involved in political activism, Pappe supported the boycott of Israel in 2005, including the academic boycott. In the same year, Pappe initiated the annual Israeli Right of Return conferences, which called for the unconditional right of return of the Palestinian refugees who were expelled in 1948.

Pappe was born in Haifa to German Jewish parents who had fled Nazi persecution in the 1930s. He graduated from the Hebrew University in 1978, and obtained his Ph.D.. from the University of Oxford in 1984.

Bill McKibben on DEEP ECONOMY

Bill McKibben’s book: ‘The End of Nature’ is regarded as the first book for a general audience about climate change. Published in 1989, it has been printed in more than 20 languages. He has since written on localization, alternative energy, and the risks associated with human genetic engineering. In his most recent book: ‘Deep Economy: The Wealth of Communities and the Durable Future’ he envisions a transition to local-scale enterprise.

McKibben and his family live in Vermont. He is a scholar in residence at Middlebury College where he launched the campaign: stepitup2007, demanding that global warming pollution be cut 80 percent by 2050. McKibben spoke in Berkeley in March 2007. The church was filled to capacity with an enthusiastic crowd. He was joined on stage by a colleague and fellow author, Michael Pollan, author of “The Omnivore's Dilemma”, and “Botany of Desire”.

Robert Fisk: THE ARMENIAN HOLOCAUST & CIVIL WAR IN IRAQ AND LEBANON

Robert Fisk, foreign correspondent for the London Independent, received an exuberant welcome when he came to the Bay Area in December 2006. He spoke on civil war in Iraq and Lebanon and the ongoing denial of the genocide of one and a half million Armenians by the Ottoman Turks in 1915.

Even though he consistently criticizes the New York Times they described him as "probably the most famous foreign correspondent in Britain" He has over thirty years of experience in international reporting. His best-selling books, based on his field notes and recordings, offer strong criticisms of Middle Eastern governments as well as British and United States government foreign policy. He spoke on December 14, 2006, in Oakland, CA.

Chris Hedges: AMERICAN FASCISTS
The Christian Right and the War on America

Chris Hedges writes about his new book: "What is happening in America is revolutionary. A group of religious utopians, with the sympathy and support of tens of millions of Americans, are slowly dismantling democratic institutions to establish a religious tyranny, the springboard to an American fascism." There are now more than 70 million evangelical Christians living in America, many of whom have established their own set of media outlets, schools, and communities.

In response to those who argue that fascism cannot possibly come to the USA Chris Hedges describes the discontent and despair that historically have driven other peoples into right wing movements. Hedges reminds us that there is fertile ground for that in the US today. The top 1 percent control more wealth than the bottom 90 percent combined. During the research for this book Hedges traveled through towns obliterated by the flight of manufacturing jobs and through soul-less suburbs. He interviewed members of mega churches who lived in despair and alienation until the church filled that void. And that's the fodder that demagogues use to amass totalitarian movements.

Chris Hedges was a foreign correspondent, for nearly two decades, for The New York Times and lost his job when he spoke out against the war. He now is a senior fellow at the Nation Institute and teaches in the Program for American Studies at Princeton University.
